Africa is very often considered as being made up of two zones.
Politically and geographically divided into two zones - North Africa and
Sub Saharan Africa. When considering cheap flights to Africa, both
demarcations exist, but then, it is much easier to locate flights
towards South Africa, rather than to the other countries in Sub Saharan
African.
Those who travel regularly to Africa often deplore the absence of competition for flights from Europe to their destination. This is mostly evident in Nigeria, where there are very few direct flights from and to London, in spite of demand. In fact, demand for cheap flights towards South Africa is also plentiful, especially when it is winter over Britain, and when the climate in South Africa looks particularly favourable.
Africa does not have major Intercontinental airport hubs, so there is greater likelihood of finding flight connections via other European airports, mainly Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt International or Amsterdam Schiphol. In fact, there is a chance to find a connection through Lisbon, Milan or Brussels.
However, direct scheduled flights from regional airports of UK to Africa still remains woefully short of expectations - except maybe from Flyglobespan's new flights from Manchester to South Africa. But there are many leisure airlines with flights to The Gambia, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco from major UK regional airports. Other than London, the most suitable leisure flights to Africa are available from Bristol, East Midlands, Birmingham and Manchester.
For accessing connecting flights via other African hubs, there are very few options, because none of these airports are connected with feeder flights from any place else in the UK other than London. Infrequently, you may find a routing via some Middle Eastern hub like Dubai or another, and envisaging the complexity of landing flights to South Africa during the winter period in UK, this can be truly a useful option!
